From 5 March to 3 August 2025, Castello Carlo V will host an unprecedented event: Renato Guttuso and Pablo Picasso – A Great Friendship in the Sign of Art. An opportunity to immerse oneself in an exhibition that celebrates the profound bond between two giants of 20th century art.

Renato Guttuso and Pablo Picasso shared an intense friendship and a fruitful relationship of artistic and intellectual exchange, marked by mutual admiration and a common vision of art as an instrument of denunciation and social commitment. Although using different languages, they both placed their painting at the service of reality, recounting its contradictions, struggles and passions. Picasso, with his commitment to depicting the tragedies of his time, as in Guernica, and Guttuso, with an art viscerally linked to popular life and social denunciation, were able to give voice to the instances of their century, fuelling a dialogue that crossed epochs and borders.

The exhibition, conceived for the Carlo V Castle in Monopoli, brings together a reasoned nucleus of works from different periods of the production of both artists, with the aim of highlighting the cardinal points of their visual thought and their intellectual history, characterised by relationships and an international scope. The exhibition also includes biographical apparatuses that guide the visitor through the crucial moments of the artistic and human adventure of Guttuso and Picasso, two artists united by a vision of art as a universal language of struggle, memory and social transformation.
