FREE BEACHES TO THE SOUTH
On the Southern side of the city you can discover an extensive stretch of shoreline characterized by fine golden sand where there are a number of public beaches and bathing establishments well equipped with spacious areas allocated for sport and entertainment during the day and also in the evenings.
CALA PORTA VECCHIA
That of the “Old Port” is the first beach you come to on the southern side of the city and close to the old town. Taking a dip in its crystal clear waters is an enchanting experience. It will seem almost like diving into the past considering the surrounding context: the 16th Century walls, the fortified tower, the artillery system and the Cathedral’s imposing bell tower. Due to its close proximity to the city centre and the presence of many B&B’s in the area it is popular with both tourists and families. Many, however, prefer to sit along the low and comfortable rocks of the shoreline beneath the 500 year old walls. Also from this bay you can watch local fishermen setting sail in their small boats. Free parking can be found in the nearby areas.
CALA PORTO BIANCO
Equally characteristic and well known is the wide sandy beach of lido “Bianco”. A beach considered to be highly suitable for every need. Access is allowed thanks to the presence of ramps and steps and free parking may be found nearby.
CALA PORTO ROSSO
A large and welcoming sandy cove where by access is made easier by the presence of a wide flight of steps. It is on the outskirts of the main built up area of the town. Its name just as those of the other 4″colored” bays – originates from the presence of a former slaughterhouse in the area, in fact the sea water was once tinted red by the blood of the slaughtered animals. The fine sand is ideal for families with children and also because the lido has shallow waters out to a considerable distance from the shore where the water becomes a deep intense blue. It is very popular with bathers from nearby towns and for those who love strong emotions you are warned however that here in parts of the sea there are some very cold currents.
PORTO NERO
The clear water and shallow sandy bottom present the eyes with a sensation of extraordinary clarity. More overshadowed with respect to the previous bays, you can get here by flanking around “Porto rosso” bay and continuing on foot to the right, or you can access the small beach through the lido named “The Black Pearl”. It is a small strip of beach surrounded by very enticing rocks.
CALA PARADISO
A fairly large bay predominantly occupied by the umbrellas of a private beach resort, but which has a small section open to the public. The basin is enclosed by rocks that hug a body of beautiful green water that reveals a glimpse of the predominantly sandy bottom.
